Start with the main flow

Before looking for details, identify the dominant direction of the river. Watch floating debris, bubbles and surface texture for at least a minute. The main flow gives every slower pocket and directional change its meaning.

Find the current seam

A current seam appears where water moving at different speeds meets. Predatory fish may use the slower side to reduce energy use while staying close to food carried by faster water.

Do not treat the visible line as a precise fish location. Use it to decide where to make your first controlled casts, then adjust based on depth, cover and response.

Inspect backflow edges

Backflow is water moving against or across the dominant current, often behind an obstruction or along a bank feature. The transition where backflow meets the main current can collect drifting food and offer a lower-energy holding area.

Work the rim of a vortex

A vortex can mix water and gather drifting material. Search the outer rim and the downstream outlet before working the center. Strong turbulence may be less efficient for fish than the edge around it.

Build a search order

  1. Observe the dominant flow and surface movement.
  2. Mark the clearest seam, backflow edge or vortex rim.
  3. Start on the slower side and cover the transition.
  4. Change angle or lure depth before abandoning the area.
  5. Compare what you saw with the result of each cast.
